A Beginner’s Guide to the NEC

This one day course will cover the basic principles and core clauses of the NEC suite of contracts.  It will explain the key differences between the contracts available in the NEC suite and provide an overview of the “need to know” contract mechanisms.  It will also look at issues involved with the administration and successful delivery of projects using NEC contracts.

There will be a focus on how to apply these key elements of the contract in practical situations.

Who should attend?

The course is suitable for any construction or legal professionals who are interested in working with or learning about the NEC suite of contracts, and have had limited or no experience of the suite.

This course will be of particular interest to recent graduates or experienced professionals who have just started to use NEC contracts.

Delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance upon completion, constituting six hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Topics covered 

Upon completion of this one-day course, attendees will have developed an understanding of:

  • The NEC suite of contracts, main options, the secondary option clauses, how to choose the right contract, and pros and cons of options A-F;
  • The roles, responsibilities and obligations within the contracts, i.e. Contractor, Project Manager, Supervisor, Employer, Quantity Surveyor, Adjudicator and Others;
  • The various constituent parts of the contract (Contract Data, Conditions, Site Information and Works Information) and how these work together;
  • Time and programming;
  • Payment and the Schedule of Cost Components;
  • Communications and notices, i.e. the requirements of various contractual notifications, time limits etc.;
  • Change management;
  • Disputes and termination; and
  • NEC3 vs NEC4.


Registration and refreshments will be available from 09:00.  The course will run from 09:30-16:30, with a break for lunch, which will be provided.


£450 including lunch and VAT.  This price includes a £15 charitable donation to our charity partner and lunch.

Please note that you will be required to pay a deposit of £50 on initial booking.  The remainder of the cost will be invoiced before commencement of the course.
